This atmospheric and deceptively simple English 1-Sheet far outshines the lacklustre design of the British Quad, which was an unusually weak effort for such a powerful film.
This is technically a photographic poster, but the coarse granular image has been reproduced in only black and orange ink to produce a striking visual with a low-tech, illustrative quality.
This image is a very cunning device as it manages to say nothing, and yet everything. The effect it has rather depends on whether one has seen the film - on the face of it this features a rather benign scene of the giant woven construction on a tranquil coastal hillside, basking in the setting sun - except, to viewers who have experienced The Wicker Man this is a truly horrific spectacle. The radiant glare of orange sunlight bursting through the figure, in this sense, carries a double meaning - perhaps it is a contradiction in terms, but this image is chilling.
