This poster is a tour de force of experimental printing, using the mechanical facets of the production process alone to create the bizarre visual effect. Here the printing press is not just a means of reproduction, it has been reinvented as an artistic tool by a creative visionary.

Two photographs overlap; a positive image of Lena Nyman’s face, and a negative image of the couple in a sexual embrace.

Although this is a lithograph produced on a commercial press the printing plates have nothing like a typical relationship to each other, and the inks are not designed to overlay in the traditional halftone method. The plates are purposefully twisted way out of register (misaligned) producing wonderful patches of vivid colour, with extremely course halftone screens to achieve the hypnotic image pattern including an unusual circular screen on the cyan plate creating the concentric ripple effect coming from Nyman’s lips.

Two versions of this poster are known to exist; one on white paper stock and one on a light yellow paper stock to suit the name. The different papers make the same ink colours appear distinctly different on the two versions; the yellow paper version shown here looks much warmer and more vibrant as strange day-glow colours materialise, which do not appear on the white. Simple technique, spectacular result.
