La Torre di Pisa offers a suitable landmark for the Tuscan setting, and beautifully describes the shape and precariousness of Domenico’s candle. The possible fate of the tower’s flawed architecture mirrors the transient vulnerability of the flame, and of course, the protagonist’s own lives.
Igor Maistrovsky’s loose chalk illustration has an ethereal translucency to match the exquisite cinematography. He often worked with dry media, and the friable pigment hanging on to the textured surface gives the image a fragility of it’s own, another hint at impermanence perhaps, like an obscure memento mori.
At the risk of being corny, the design appropriates a suitable flavour; the tiled border bears resemblance to Italy’s ubiquitous piastrelle, complimented by the classical Roman typeface. Incidentally, the tonal variations across the image backdrop and light-coloured streaks in the upper border are actually printing defects, and present on every single copy we have seen.
