Notable for it’s extreme brutality, and in particular the dark comedy surrounding it, the controversy caused by this release seemed to stem as much from the promo posters as from the film itself. Many campaigners for censorship took one look at this image and made up their minds.
Undoubtedly shocking, Le Brun’s painting delivered the perfect tone and was adopted by most countries who gave Man Bites Dog a theatrical release. It did prove to be too risky in some places though, including some of Europe’s more liberal countries, who opted for a slightly less disturbing image featuring a pair of dentures in place of the baby soother.
The US poster avoided the issue altogether, discarding the best publicity money could buy in favour of a loud but very lacklustre layout. You'll notice that it isn't included in this collection.
