Balzac’s Restoration classic received its second Russian film adaption by Aleksandr Orlov, in 1987. The Parisienne novel concerns itself with societal wealth, greed and the moral conundrums of usury and exploitation, centred around the eponymous moneylender, the miserly Gobseck.
Veteran poster designer Volf paints a satirical treatment of the multi-faceted Balzacian stereotypes; beneath their grandeur and bourgeoise finery they are likened to birds of prey, hunters, ruthless and self-interested, competing among themselves for pieces of gold.
