The official Advance 1-sheet featuring the ‘Why So Serious?’ artwork seems to be the most popular poster of The Dark Knight, but this earlier wilding poster has the most creative and atmospheric design.
The concept is reminiscent of the banal computer generated photo-mosaic images of the millennium, which compiled one large pixelated image from many smaller ones. The tired old technique is reinvented here to incorporate an inspired thematic reference for once, employing layers of Joker cards as mosaic tiles. It is well conceived, beautifully executed, sinister and enticing; a teaser image that works on every level.
This is a rare digital-era piece in the collection, one of the highlights of US film poster design in modern times.
