A striking image layered with symbolism, this is a masterful example of Flisak’s understated prowess; he is able to represent the film's title, the principal characters and the narrative’s fundamental themes in a single minimalist image. The convent school nuns of Margit Kaffka’s 1917 novel swarm around the sacred symbol of Christ, while the cross itself is presented as a hallowed space, pure and untrodden. Only the dissident character of Virginia breaks the colony formation and dares to tread where she shouldn’t.
The wit of this design is precisely gauged and suits the film perfectly, matched only by its deceptive simplicity; it is hard to imagine how else the main themes of Catholicism, unquestioning obedience and (non)conformity could be conveyed as concisely or effectively as this.
