This striking image is taken directly from the opening still, and through the course of the film its significance is elevated to a disconcerting existential metaphor. Fishing motifs fatefully crop up on several occasions and, lest we forget, they stoically remind us of the certitude of death and the triviality of life. We are all fish, and we will all be caught.
The unorthodox choice and audacious use of typeface is unexpected, but it pays off. Designed in 1932 at the height of Art Deco popularity, this geometric reworking of medieval blackletter calligraphy melded the very old with the very new. It doesn’t often bring harmony with it, but for a film that bucks trends and flaunts the most ironic juxtapositions, Morris Fuller Benton’s font seems quite at home.
