Typical surrealist fair from Eva Švankmajerová, whose artwork is as distinctive and recognisable as her husband’s films. Treading similar paths as Chagall, Dali, and Bacon, but to limit Eva with such comparisons is a disservice to her unique visions. The images are of course fantastically bizarre, but palatable and seductive.

Here the lead character and his first love are depicted as items of male and female footwear (the boy’s father is a shoemaker). The fleshy pink high heel of the sandal pushes its way awkwardly into the soft pink recess of the male shoe, like a sex act subverted by role reversal - eroticism and feminism feature often in Eva’s work. This coupling takes place in the open, overlooked by rows of occupied houses; the sex here is very much public, not a private affair, which carries the film’s central themes of prostitution and voyeurism.

Every bit of typography is rendered by Eva’s hand, from tiny handwritten credits to large structural blocks that form the title. Her headlines are often presented in this style, askew and out of perspective but with light, shade and dimension nevertheless, insisting that they belong within the spatial context of the image itself. The improvement over flat, superimposed titles applied by a layout artworker is tremendous.
