From the angular typography to the grisly image, this design does everything it can to induce discomfort and anxiety in the viewer, and embody the title through creative visuals (the Greek title O Fovos traslates literally as ‘The Fear’).
The ugly photograph concentrates on the woman buried at the bottom, in stark monochrome. It depicts a savage sexual attack by an overpowering male, with an aggressive kiss that looks more like a bite. As well as being pressed under the man, the terrified woman is also trapped beneath the weight of the imposing title, which seems to have a physical presence of its own. The lettering looks heavy and sharp, as if it might be harmful, and it appears to be wedged into the frame, with ‘A’ and ‘T’ braced tightly against the edges of the page resulting in a stress fracture running through the word. As it encroaches on the figures below it amplifies the sense of powerlessness and claustrophobia.
The lines of incidental typography are just as unsettling, out of kilter and off balance (nothing except for the logo is displayed horizontally), denying the viewer any reassurance amid the chaos. These appear to be tumbling onto the main title, like pieces of rubble in a collapsing structure. Lastly, as a backdrop to such jarring graphics, the phlegm colour is just as unpleasant; it is certainly an eye-catching device, but decidedly nauseating.
