Lucinda Cowell’s soft airbrush illustration presents the awkward relationship of George and Simone, an uncouth working class gangster and an exotic beauty, against the backdrop of London’s seedy underworld. In an age of garish designs this poster opts for an Art Deco inspired style, perhaps likening George’s wistful yearnings to a romanticised longing for a bygone age. Soho’s neon signs are an ever-present reminder of their surroundings with Simone, for all her elegance, framed unmistakably with a red light.
The illustration was designed for this portrait format, but the landscape British Quad tries to make use of this image as well. Unfortunately the Quad is a huge waste of space, literally, with half of the panel devoted to telling us why we need to see the film. It may have been more successful as a piece of money-making propaganda, but as a standalone piece of art this 1-sheet is infinitely superior.
