A beautiful example of Saul Bass at his peak. In his golden era spanning the late 50s and early 60s Bass produced many iconic poster images and title sequences that have become as famous and recognisable as the films themselves.

The names of the cast are utilised as graphic devices, forming the shape of the briefcase, a technique seen on European posters from which Bass drew considerable influence. The blanket red field is politically symbolic, and secreted among the US politicians (ie. the cast names) are several hollow stars as found on the Soviet flag, suggesting the subtle infiltration of Communism among the ranks. At the time the establishment demonised this so-called anti-Americanism as the most terrifying threat known to man, and lurking within Washington’s Capitol dome is a similarly ominous symbol; a core of bright red.

This design is functional, economical and conceptually very witty, as notable as anything Bass produced. It is often overlooked by those seduced by his more famous (valuable) titles, but this comfortably ranks alongside the designer’s best work.
