Hajime Sorayama’s disturbing image is not directly from the film, but serves as a suitably grotesque precursor to the jaw-dropping, no-holds-barred spectacle of grand-guignol it has in store. A perfect teaser, as any poster should be.

This shares a lot of thematic similarities with Sorayama’s poster for Naked Lunch from the same period, especially the bizarre intertwining of tantalising erotica with repulsive horror. The film indeed culminates in a twisted orgy with Lionel and Pacquita’s killing frenzy, and within the grisly, gore-drenched climax of their euphoric bloodlust lies a blatant sexual allusion. It continues here; the nurse is young and overtly glamorised, much more than the older and intentionally unappealing screen version. Diseased, damaged, and bound to the mutant zombie child (the nurse’s own disfigured offspring), she appears to be in some lustful state of arousal in spite of, or because of, her sickening ordeal. Desire, debauchery, distaste and disgust blur into one.
