Softcore illustrator Sorayama of ‘Sexy Robot’ fame lent his airbrush technique to a couple of Japanese horror posters in the early 90s - David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch and Peter Jackson’s Braindead.
Interestingly, both films revolve around similar themes; infection and intoxication from some form of blood contamination, and the bizarre psycho- and physiological effects they inflict. As these manifest through increasingly schizophrenic and inhuman behaviour we are asked whether the subjects are still worthy of our love and compassion in spite of the mutations that have taken place. Both posters represent this aptly.
Combining his usual subjects with gruesome imagery from the two films Sorayama presents a paradox of attraction and repulsion; beauty ravaged and perverted in a pair of thoroughly nauseating paintings, that somehow exhibit a strangely erotic quality. The woman’s fingers caress and probe the opening in the giant beetle’s chitinous exoskeleton, directly emulating female masturbation, but the sex is obscured within a grisly entomophobic nightmare.
